Peachpit Portal of Safari Books Online

Safari Books Online Peachpit Portal

Summary

This is the Peachpit portal of the Safari Books Online famlily of portals. If you compare it to http://my.safaribooksonline.com/, you can see that it is a customized user interface. It features a system of four tabs, each with thier specific strategic roles in familiarizing users to Safari Books Online. This UI can be leveraged for various content customizations specific to the portal's target user base.

My part in this project was threefold. I consulted on the design and designed the underlying functionality, performed all production work on the Photoshop files to produce all of the optimized visual graphics, and authored all of the supporting XTHML, CSS and JavaScript.

Rollout of the second "Anonymous UI" project is scheduled for release in September 2008 on the Informit Portal

Implementation Notes

This anonymous homepage view of the UI is built on an AJAX framework.

This project was the overhaul of the company's corporate Web site in 2006. The timeline for the project from conception to go live was under 90 days. In total it was a phenomenal undertaking and success in interdepartmental teamwork.

I was technical lead on the project, consulted on the visual design, performed all production work on the Photoshop designs, authored all of the XHTML and CSS, and wrote the supporting server-side code.

Implementation Notes

The site is built using a CSS based layout on a PHP template framework. It was built for search engine optimization and accessibility and features adherence to Web standards.

Summary

A collaboration with a graphic artist collegue. I did not collaborate on the design, only the implementation aspect. Though a simple-appearing site, it did present a fair amount of challenges.

My Contribution

After the challenge of getting IE to behave with the CSS layout in general, I had to figure out a way to have the images remain centered on the right whether they are (randomly) in portrait or landscape layout. I must admit, I had to do a bit of research on this problem. I found my solution using ideas from a couple of articles I found. The result is a stable configuration that will not break or tweak as the images switch back and forth from portrait to landscape.

The site was built on PHP driven XHTML templates using CSS for layout.

Summary

This project began with the establishment of a logo and branding for the client for use in thier advertising and print media as well as their Web site. The site serves as a principal means of this client's job acquisition. Since launch, the client's business has increased dramatically with the coordination of their advertising and the new site. Core to this client's needs is the image gallery, which was designed to accomodate easy management by the client.

Implementation Notes

Built on PHP driven XHTML templates. The image gallery on this site uses the Lightbox 2.0 framework.
